Submission of Abstracts
Abstracts for presentations should be submitted by e-mail to maa9@convex.co.jp. All abstracts should be submitted in Microsoft Word format (*.doc, *.docx). Images should be embedded within MS Word documents. Since abstracts will be published in a forthcoming issue of the British Journal of Anaesthesia (BJA), submissions should comply with the following criteria:
- Abstracts must be written in English.
- Original research, not previously published or presented;
- All authors support the submission of the abstract;
- Animal studies received ethics committee review;
- Poster presentation at the MAA9 Conference is a requirement for publication in BJA; and
- Abstract submission certifies that author(s) agree to publication in the BJA.
Abstract Preparation
- Abstracts should fit a single, A4 (210 x 297 mm) sheet with 12 point Times New Roman font for text and symbols, 1-inch margins and single line spacing.
- Paragraphs should be flush left, ragged right and have zero-point spacing before and after.
- Do not use hard carriage returns after each line.
- Abstracts should be formatted as follows:
Abstract title [bold font; capitalize only the first word and any proper nouns] All authorsʼ initials and last names [e.g. SE Jones]. Indicate presenting author using an asterisk [e.g. JK Kline*]. The address(es) where the work was carried out [Multiple addresses should be associated with authorsʼ names using superscripted numbers].
Abstract Text. Separate paragraphs for the following sections, with bolded headings for each section and no space between paragraphs:
- Introduction: Clearly state the general purpose of the study.
- Methods: Describe the protocol and materials used.
- Results: Provide the major findings, including data. Data can be in table or graph form.
- Discussion: Interpret data and state the conclusions that follow.
- References: These are listed and cited as specified by the BJA, except that the articlesʼ titles should be omitted. There is no restriction on the number of references cited. References should be separated by a semi-colon and should all be contained within a single paragraph.
- Table/figure. One table or figure is permitted. The table/figure should be incorporated into the document. If a figure is used, ensure that a figure caption is provided within the abstract document. Use size 12-pt Times New Roman font inside the figure (e.g. axis labels).
Acknowledgment of funding sources. It is not appropriate to thank contributors to the study here; please limit this section only to listing funding sources.
Please note: Abstracts will not be accepted unless they are formatted correctly. Include in your submission email 2 - 4 keywords taken from the National Library of Medicineʼs Medical Subject Headings (MeSH).
Notification of Abstract Acceptance: You will receive e-mail notification of abstract acceptances. In addition to publication in BJA, abstracts will be printed in the Final Program, as submitted, and distributed with Conference Materials.
